Melted or Spinning Gas Control Knob? How to Replace It Properly
A broken knob isn't cosmetic — here's why
It is tempting to leave a cracked or spinning knob and turn the tap with pliers. Don't.
- A knob that spins on the shaft cannot reliably turn the gas off. You think the burner is off. You cannot be sure it is. That is a gas-left-on risk at closing time.
- A melted or distorted knob can jam the tap part-open — or stop it reaching the full-off position.
- A knob with worn indexing loses its position marks, so nobody knows what setting the burner is actually at.
- Turning a bare spindle with pliers chews the flats. Once the shaft is rounded off, you are replacing the whole gas tap — a £86–£109 part — instead of a £9.99 knob.
That last point is the real cost. A £9.99 knob left broken becomes a £99 valve.
Why do commercial gas knobs fail?
- Heat. Knobs sit right beside burners. Plastic knobs distort and go brittle. This is the number one killer.
- The insert wears out. The knob's D-shaped socket rounds off, so it turns without moving the shaft.
- Cleaning chemicals attack plastics and printed markings.
- Force. A stiff tap gets forced, and the knob loses the argument.
If your knobs keep failing, check whether the tap is stiff. A seizing gas tap destroys knob after knob, and the tap is the real fault.
How do I measure for a replacement?
Three measurements. Take them from the old knob and the exposed spindle.

The shaft is the one that must be exactly right. Diameter is mostly about looks and grip; the shaft is what actually transmits the turn.

Fitting
- Turn the gas off at the appliance.
- Pull the old knob straight off the spindle — they are usually push-fit. If it is stuck, wiggle gently; don't lever against the fascia.
- Inspect the spindle. If the flats are rounded off, a new knob will not grip and you need the tap seen to.
- Line up the flat on the knob's socket with the flat on the spindle. Push straight on.
- Check it turns the tap fully off and fully on, and that the markings line up with the fascia.
Knob replacement is not gas work in itself — but if the tap is stiff, seizing, or the spindle is worn, that is gas work and must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for commercial catering.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a domestic cooker knob?
No. Commercial knobs deal with far more heat and much heavier use. A domestic knob will distort quickly, and the shaft fitting is usually wrong anyway.
My knob turns but the gas doesn't change. What now?
The knob's socket has rounded off, or the spindle has. Pull the knob and look at the spindle flats. Sharp flats → new knob fixes it. Rounded spindle → the tap needs replacing.
Are metal knobs worth the extra?
In a hot section, yes. £15 for a zinc alloy knob that doesn't melt beats £9.99 for a plastic one you replace every few months — and you stop risking the spindle each time one fails.
