Black Iron Gas Pipe Fittings: BSP Sizes, Reducers and Kitchen Pipework
Why black iron for gas?
Black iron (sometimes called black malleable) is the standard for gas pipework in UK commercial kitchens. It is strong, it takes a threaded joint reliably, and it handles the knocks, heat and grease of a working kitchen.
It is not plumbing pipe. Don't improvise gas connections from parts intended for water. Gas fittings are a specified, regulated component.
BSP is not NPT — and this matters
This is the mistake that causes leaking joints.
- BSP (British Standard Pipe) — the UK standard. What you need.
- NPT (National Pipe Thread) — the American standard. You will see it on imported American equipment, and on some parts like Robertshaw thermostats.
The thread forms are different. They have different thread angles and different tapers. A BSP fitting will start to thread into an NPT port — it will feel like it is working — and it will never seal properly. It will leak, and gas leaks are not a "come back to it" problem.
If you have American equipment with NPT ports and British BSP pipework, you need the correct adaptor. Do not force the two together.
What each fitting actually does

Why do I need reducers at all?
Because the gas main into the kitchen is sized for the whole load, and individual appliances are not.
A typical run steps down: a 3/4" main feeds the line, and an appliance takes a 1/2" connection — so you need a 3/4" × 1/2" reducer. A smaller appliance or a pilot line may drop to 3/8", needing a 1/2" × 3/8" bush.
Never reduce a run below what the appliance needs. Under-sized pipework starves the burner — you get poor flames, poor performance, and a fault that looks like a broken jet or valve but is actually just gas starvation.
Supporting the pipework
The unglamorous part everyone skips. Gas pipe must be properly supported — an unsupported run sags, strains its joints, and gets knocked in a busy kitchen. Strained joints leak.

Who can fit gas pipework?
Let's be completely clear, because this is the one area where there is no grey zone.
Gas pipework in a UK commercial kitchen must be installed, altered and tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for commercial catering. Every joint must be tested for tightness. This is not a job to have a go at, and it is not a job to let a general plumber do.
What you can usefully do is make sure your engineer has the right fittings on hand so the job isn't held up. Order before 10am and they'll be there next day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use PTFE tape on gas fittings?
Use a jointing compound or tape approved for gas. Standard white plumbing PTFE is not the same product. Your Gas Safe engineer will use the correct one — this is exactly why the job is theirs.
How do I know if my threads are BSP or NPT?
UK pipework is BSP. American-built appliances often have NPT ports — Robertshaw thermostats and high limits are specified in NPT for that reason. If a fitting starts but won't run home cleanly, stop: you have almost certainly mixed the two.
Can I reuse old fittings?
Threads deform, and old jointing compound is baked into them. At £5.99 a fitting, reusing them to save a few pounds on a gas joint is a poor trade.
My burner is weak across the whole appliance — could it be the pipework?
Yes. If every burner is underperforming rather than one, suspect gas supply — undersized pipework, a partially closed isolation valve, or a regulator problem — before you start replacing jets and valves.
